Yew and Osage Bow Staves and Billets
Two unusual pieces of snake or character wood for the traditional bowyer to finish.
First is a one piece Osage orange stave. It has enough wood in the riser for a recurve type handle. The lower limb has a nice snake curve in it. A stringline intersects nicely and the tips line up with the riser. The handle and the tips are roughed in. 62 inches long. It is still too stout to bend and will need to be tilliered and finished. It has a lot of natural setback.
The second is a 72 inch Yew longbow made from two billets joined in a Z splice. Some setback was figured in when gluing the splice. This blank has wavy bumps all the way down both limbs, when it is tillered with a cabinet scraper slow going following the valleys will be required. This will turn out to be a classic English yew wood longbow, but with character that none other will have. Again this bow will need to be tillered to the desired weight and pull length, and then finished.
I started these 20 years ago and probably won't get around to finishing them. The wood has been kept sealed with Carnauba wax.
